General Information
Generalities:
Regular triennial meetings are organized by the board
of the Solar Physics Section of the European
Physical Society and the European Astronomical Society.
The 8th European Meeting on Solar Physics will be held close to
Thessaloniki ,
Greece and will cover a variety of issues, from the solar
interior to the heliosphere and cosmic rays. Particular emphasis will be
given to the Ulysses results. Invited talks, oral presentations and posters
will cover most of research activity in solar and space physics.
Meeting format:
Each of the seven scientific sessions of the
meeting will consist of two invited review talks,
several oral contributed papers and a poster session.
The time allocated for the oral presentations, including discussion, is
40 minutes for invited reviews and 20 minutes for oral contributions.
The space available for each poster is equivalent to six A4
pages.
Registration fee :
The registration fee is 120 USD, which includes the
use of the conference facilities, coffee-tea breaks and some social events.
Travel checks in USD will be accepted, as well as
cash in any European convertible currency. Credit cards cannot be
used for the registration fee.
Proceedings:
The invited reviews will be published in the
Springer-Verlag Lecture Notes in Physics series (eds:
C.E. Alissandrakis, G. Simnett, L. Vlahos) detailed instructions
to the authors will be given by the editors during the meeting.
The contributed
papers (including posters) will be published
in a special volume of Solar Physics
All conference
papers will be handled in the same way as regular papers
submitted to Solar Physics , i.e. they will be refereed, and must
have scientific quality comparable to regular Solar Physics
papers. Papers which will not reach this standard cannot be
accepted for publication and will be only announced by title as
"presented at the conference; for preprints ask xxx". Authors of
unfinished papers or papers with preliminary results are advised
not to submit any manuscript for publication, but rather give an
indication where the final version of their study will be
published or submitted. This can be then added to the reference
to their presentation.
The maximum length of papers submitted to Solar Physics will
be announced during the conference, where the authors will also
obtain further instructions for publication. Deadline for
submission of all papers will be six weeks after the conference.
In that case the special volume could appear early in 1997.
The Proceedings organizers are P. Heinzel and G. Simnett.
An Abstracts booklet, with all the accepted contributions,
will be distributed during the meeting.
Accommodation:
All participants will stay at
Pallini Beach Hotel ,
the meeting place. The hotel is located in the peninsula of
Kassandra
in Halkidiki at Kallithea village
and can comfortably host about 200 participants.
Its facilities include a large conference hall, several smaller conference
rooms, restaurants, bars, private beach, outdoor swimming pool. A special
agreement has been negotiated for half-board per day:
Single room: 65 USD , Double room: 50 USD/person.
Please, complete the hotel and travel information form
( (LaTeX file) ,
(ASCII file) ) and
return it to SPM-96, if possible by fax or express mail,
not later than April 17th. Forms received after that date
will not be considered.
Financial Support:
Those who have applied for financial support
will be informed by a separate e-mail message.
Travel Information
Travelling to Thessaloniki :
The easiest and more comfortable way
to reach Thessaloniki is by plane. There are several daily flights connecting
Thessaloniki with Athens airport, from where international flights to any
desired destination are operated. There are also a few regular flights
connecting
directly Thessaloniki with some major European cities, operating all the
year. Quite good train connection is available from Athens. The
travelling time by train is about 7 hours.
How to reach Pallini Beach Hotel :
The meeting place Pallini
Beach Hotel is about 100 km from Thessaloniki. Since it is
not easy to reach Pallini Beach Hotel by public transportation, we
are organizing a bus shuttle from the airport on Monday 13th.
The timetable of the bus shuttle service will be scheduled according to
the majority of arrivals. A
welcome desk at Thessaloniki airport will be indicated by SPM-96
posted signs.
Please, help the LOC by giving all necessary details on your
travel plans.
The taxi fare from Thessaloniki airpot to the Pallini Beach Hotel
is approximately 60 USD.
Passport and Visa:
For EU citizens a valid passport is sufficient. A
Visa is required for participants from the former Soviet Union and other
eastern countries. Participants from other countries should contact
the Greek embassy or consulate at their
country for more information.
Weather:
In May the climate is warm (by northern standard) but
pleasant, so that light clothing is suggested. The minimum and the maximum
average daily temperatures in the last 5 years have been 17 C and 24 C and
the rain expectation is
less than 10 %.
